PhD School 2012: Europe in the World

Venue: Center for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES) at the University Institute of Lisbon (IUL),  Lisbon, Portugal

Date: 18th - 30th June 2012

Summary

The PhD Summer School focused on the role of the European Union (EU) as an international actor, the evolution and implications of the EU's development and foreign policies before and after the Lisbon Treaty, but also how the global environment affects EU policies and politics. Accordingly, the School had both an 'outward' perspective on the implications of the behavior and action of EU agents and policies in international arenas and an 'inward' focus on the impact of globalization on the EU's institutions and policies. The school dealt with the theme "Europe in the World" from both a theoretical and empirical perspective and discuss relevant research methods. By means of concrete examples, various research techniques were discussed, including methods and theoretical tools known from comparative politics, international relations, foreign policy analysis, and others. The purpose was to bring together and train PhD-students in theoretical, empirical and research-strategic issues on the subject matter. Additionally, the purpose was to support PhD-students in furthering their research projects. The PhD Summer School aimed at political science PhD-students from various sub-disciplines including EU-studies, international relations, comparative politics, and public administration.

The event was co-sponsored by the LISBOAN Erasmus Academic Network (www.lisboan.net), ECPR (www.ecprnet.eu), the SGEU of the ECPR (http://ecpr-sgeu.sabanciuniv.edu/), and CIES-IUL (www.cies.iscte.pt).
